Agricultural electrical work requires different thinking than standard commercial or domestic installations. Equipment often operates in dusty, damp, or corrosive environments. Installations have to withstand temperature extremes, pest intrusion, and mechanical impacts. Three-phase power is common for larger equipment, and outdoor cabling must be protected from livestock, pests, machinery, and weather. It is genuinely one of the most demanding environments we work in, and we absolutely love it. Farming is such an important sector, and given our rural location, one that is very close to our hearts. Many farmers are discovering that solar PV offers exceptional value for agricultural buildings. Large barn roofs provide ideal installation space, and farming operations often have substantial daytime electricity consumption – a perfect match for solar generation. 

The unique electrical demands of agricultural environments 

No two farms are the same, but most share the same fundamental challenges: electrical infrastructure that must perform reliably in conditions that would defeat a standard installation within months. Livestock buildings expose cables and fittings to ammonia-rich atmospheres, condensation, and physical contact from animals, while grain stores and feed mills generate fine particulate matter that can infiltrate enclosures and create fire risks if the wrong equipment and specifications are installed. Silage and slurry handling areas introduce highly corrosive conditions into the mix, so it really is a uniquely demanding sector for electrical installations. 
 
This is why agricultural electrical work in the UK must adhere to specific and robust regulatory controls, including BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations) and the additional requirements set out for agricultural and horticultural premises. Getting this wrong isn't just a compliance issue, it's a safety issue and one that insurers take seriously.

Three-phase power for agricultural equipment 

Much of the heavy equipment that modern farming relies on – large grain dryers, irrigation pumps, walk-in refrigeration units, workshop machinery, and high-output ventilation systems – requires three-phase power rather than the single-phase 230V supply standard in domestic settings. Three-phase 400V supply delivers more power more efficiently, reduces the strain on individual circuit components, and is simply how most commercial agricultural equipment is designed to run. 
 
If your farm buildings don't currently have a three-phase supply, or if an existing supply needs upgrading to meet increased demand, this involves working with your District Network Operator (DNO) – in our region, typically National Grid Electricity Distribution – alongside the design and installation work we carry out on your side of the meter. MeKo manages this process on behalf of clients regularly, handling the application, the design specification, and the full installation through to commissioning. 

Outdoor installations and weatherproofing 

Agricultural sites require extensive outdoor electrical infrastructure too – heavy-duty lighting, external power outlets, electric fencing energisers, pump controls, and cabling runs between buildings that may span considerable distances across open land. Each of these presents specific weatherproofing challenges that demand correct material selection and installation practice from the outset. 
 
Underground cabling on farms must be suitably armoured and buried to a depth that protects against cultivation and machinery movement, while above-ground runs need robust mechanical protection and an appropriate cable type for resistance to UV exposure. Outdoor distribution boards and control panels must carry sufficient IP ratings for their exposure level, with drainage designed in rather than added as an afterthought. 
 
It's also worth noting that overhead lines – common on older farm sites – carry their own set of risks, particularly where farm machinery with extending arms or high loads is in regular operation. We are always happy to advise clients on whether overhead runs should be rerouted underground as part of wider improvement projects. 

Automation and control systems 

The shift towards precision farming is driving significant demand for electrical control and automation infrastructure. Automated ventilation systems in poultry and pig units, programmable feeding systems, irrigation controls, temperature monitoring in crop storage, and remote telemetry for pumping stations are all areas where good electrical design directly affects both animal welfare and business performance.

Solar PV for agricultural buildings and farm diversification 

Following on from the earlier points on solar PV, agricultural buildings – particularly the large, south-facing pitched roofs common on modern grain stores and livestock buildings – are among the most commercially attractive locations for solar PV installation in the UK. The combination of roof area, minimal shading, and substantial on-site consumption during daylight hours means that agricultural solar projects typically achieve strong returns. 
 
Feed-in tariff support has largely been replaced by the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme, under which surplus generation can be sold back to the grid, though the rates vary between energy suppliers and are considerably lower than peak electricity purchase prices. The commercial case for agricultural solar therefore rests primarily on self-consumption, making it well suited to farms with significant daytime electrical loads. 
 
Battery storage changes the picture further. By capturing surplus generation for use in the evening or during peak tariff periods, battery systems extend the proportion of a farm's demand that can be met from its own generation. For some operations, particularly those with high and consistent electrical loads, the combination of solar and battery storage is now delivering a meaningful reduction in grid dependency. 
 
There's also a farm diversification dimension worth considering. Planning policy for agricultural buildings and land has become more permissive in recent years in relation to renewable energy, and some landowners are exploring larger-scale ground-mounted solar on less productive land – either for their own consumption or under lease arrangements with solar developers. This is a complex area involving planning consent, grid connection, and lease negotiation, but the fundamentals of the electrical installation work remain the same. Safety in harsh agricultural environments 

Electrical safety on farms carries particular weight. Agricultural environments present a concentration of risk factors: water, metal structures, earthing challenges in large open buildings, and the presence of people working quickly under pressure, often in low light or adverse conditions. Livestock themselves present risks – both from contact with electrical installations and as a complicating factor in ensuring equipotential bonding is correctly managed in areas such as milking parlours, where stray voltage issues can affect animal welfare and milk yields. 
 
The Health and Safety Executive publishes specific guidance on electrical safety in agriculture, and periodic inspection and testing of agricultural electrical installations is strongly advisable – on a more frequent basis than equivalent commercial premises, given the demanding operating conditions. An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) for an agricultural site should be carried out by someone who understands what they're looking at in that context, not simply someone applying the same checklist used for an office building.
